It is around three in the morning. I am lying on my mattress in the tent and cannot sleep; my mind is racing. Suddenly I hear noises from outside: people stop in front of the tent and talk. After a few seconds I realise they are not just talking: they are praying. When they finish, I start praying too, and my thoughts clear. Just before I fall asleep, one question comes to mind: how are we going to find our way out of this labyrinth?
A lot has changed at Horgony lately. From the beginning, our system was upside down in a way: first we organised camps, then the trainings started, and only after that were local clubs opened. No wonder those clubs no longer exist. We needed a realignment.
“Never before had I had this feeling of being loved just because, cared for not only physically, but spiritually as well.”
Lilla Z., leader at Horgony
For more than ten years, one couple organised the camp every year, from building showers in the woods to packing the last box. They led Horgony at the same time, and the load became unbearable. So they began to transform the system and handed the camp leadership to a separate team.
The hardest part was finding capable people for the board. Many do not see the countless working hours behind the finished product. They look at a camp like a delicious pie and think: finally, it is done. What they do not see is that we have not even mixed the eggs and the milk yet. The process has only just begun, and we still need their help for the long run.
Our vision is a network of local clubs that has a transforming impact on Hungarian society. That is why we are strengthening our connections with local churches. At the moment we have seven active members whose first priority is to stabilise the leadership of Horgony. Our mission is to help churches start local groups through which children can be reached with the gospel.
One leader, Lilla Z., told us about her first camp as a teenager: 'Never before had I had this feeling of being loved just because. Over time I understood that this atmosphere came from God's presence. Today I am a leader at Horgony, and I have just completed the instructor course to continue this ministry.'
If I had to choose one word for transformation, it would be 'labyrinth'. Every step brings change: you change your perspective and your direction. Sometimes we see the way for a while, then it disappears. Hebrews 13:8 says: 'Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever!' He is constant, and with His guidance we already have our way out. We only need to pray, be patient and trust that God will lead us.
